Mission

The DISEASE CONTROL BRANCH is committed to the protection of public health through early detection, intervention and treatment of communicable and sexually transmitted diseases.

The Disease Control Branch provides a variety of services to the individual and the community: preventive care (immunizations, TB screening); treatment of acute problems (sexually transmitted diseases and tuberculosis); and investigations to prevent the spread of certain communicable diseases.

PROGRAMS

Communicable Disease Program

The Communicable Disease Program provides investigation, consultation and information on contagious diseases, including water and food borne outbreaks. The program provides referrals for post-exposure treatment for individuals exposed to a communicable disease, if indicated.

Healthy Children Connection (serving the desert area only)

The Healthy Children Connection (HCC) is a program to provide nursing case management to at-risk pregnant women and mothers in the Coachella Valley. HCC is funded in part by a grant from The California Wellness Foundation. The program seeks to foster the obtainment of optimal health for pregnant women and children.

For more information regarding HCC, please call (951) 354-1438.

Immunization Program

The Immunizations Program provides comprehensive immunization services to reduce the incidence of specific diseases that are known to be preventable by immunization.
The program services include year round childhood immunization clinics, seasonal adult immunization services for influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia, and activities for prevention of Hepatitis B during the perinatal period.

For more information regarding Immunization Clinics, please call 1-888-246-1215.

Immunization Registry (VaxTrack)

The Immunization Registry Program oversees the activities of VaxTrack in Riverside County.

VaxTrack is a confidential, computerized information system that manages information pertaining to childhood immunizations. It is an important tool for ensuring that all children are immunized on time.

For more information regarding this program, please call (951) 354-1400 or toll free 1 (866) 434-8774.

Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program

The Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program assists pregnant women who are hepatitis B positive. It ensures that their infants and family are protected against hepatitis B infection.

A pregnant woman may unknowingly have hepatitis B virus (HBV) in their blood and pass it on to her infant at birth.

State law mandates that all pregnant women be tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg). Positive results must be reported to the County of Riverside Community Health Agency Department of Public Health on a Confidential Morbidity Report (CMR) by fax or mail. Reports may also be made by telephone. (Visit our Provider's Information page.) When Disease Control receives the CMR, a referral is made to the Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program (PHBPP) Coordinator. The coordinator then does follow-up to ensure these infants receive appropriate preventive treatment. Close household contacts are also referred for evaluation and immunization if indicated.

For more information regarding this program please call 1-951-358-5107.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) Program

The Sexually Transmitted Disease Program’s mission is to promote healthy sexual behavior and reduce the impact of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) in Riverside County. Trends in existing and emerging STDs are monitored and new knowledge about STDs, risk behaviors, treatment and prevention is gathered on an on-going basis.

The program also promotes behavior that prevents the spread of STDs, while diagnosis, treatment, counseling, partner notification and referrals are provided to those suffering from STDs. For the health care community, the program offers technical and clinical expertise.

Finally, we assure accessible health services to anyone who thinks they may have been exposed to a STD. Fees are based on a sliding scale.

For more information about this program, call 1-877-STD-FACTS.

Tuberculosis Control

The program provides tuberculosis information and educational resources for the Department, medical community, and public.
